Karuna Arts Yoga
Class Descriptions

The word “Hatha” is an umbrella term for any physical practice that is called yoga.  At Karuna Arts Yoga we offer Viniyoga and Anusara-Inspired yoga.

Viniyoga: In this approach to yoga practice, postures emphasize balancing the spine and breath awareness. The term viniyoga translated from Sanskrit means “to adapt.” Adapting the practice to fit each student's needs is the essence of this methodology whose roots draw from the teaching of Sri Krishnamacharya.

  • Beginning Viniyoga: This class assists those who have never practiced yoga, those requiring a slower pace, or those who have not practiced yoga for a number of years. Feel the ease and balance yoga offers as you start with the basics: safety, breath, movement and awareness. Whether you are a beginner or in need of a refresher, feel the ease and balance yoga offers as you start the basics.
  • All-Levels Viniyoga: A great class for beginners and open to all levels of students. Use the power of breath, mind, and body to unfold into the balance available only through yoga practice. The instructor offers students options to customize the practice to their needs.

Anusara-inspired Hatha Yoga: Anusara-inspired Hatha Yoga: These classes are inspired by Anusara yoga as developed by John Friend. Anusara is distinguished by its attention to alignment principles in the body and with the Deeper Order of the Divine. Each class includes time for centering and an active flowing (vinyasa) practice – linking poses with attention to body awareness and breath, with a particular focus for the day.

Release and Restore: Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, this gentle class offers support for relieving tension and stress, balancing energy, and becoming more centered. Each class is comprised of active modified, energy-building poses that invite the body to stretch and open as well as passive, supported yoga postures to promote a sense of calm and tranquility.

Intermediate Viniyoga:  This class is a little stronger than the All Levels Viniyoga class and will require experience knowing your limits as it will challenge your core strength and will offer a number of traditional yoga postures.

Hatha Flow: Great class to strengthen, tone, gain flexibility and MOVE! definitely more of a 'power yoga' class, you'll sweat and work your edge!! You'll learn breathing techniques, focus and balance. Learn how becoming more aware of your physical body, mental body and breathing can change your life, especially beyond your yoga practice. Previous experience in a hatha flow class is a plus and please be free of any major injuries. This class can be physically demanding- please honor and respect your body.

Gentle Yoga:  This gentle class utilizes asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing practice), and yoga nidra (relaxation) techniques to deepen the effects of the practice taking the body, breath, and mind softly into a deeper state of relaxed awareness.
